What is Herpes ?


Herpes is a virus that lives in the nervous system and shows up periodically on the skin. There are two kinds of herpes virus. One is herpes simplex virus, which causes genital herpes, and causes cold sores on the lips and around the mouth, also includinng legs and fingers. The other virus is Herpes zoster, which causes chickenpox and shingles. The virus can transfer to other body parts, but it is rare.

If you have herpes, you’re not alone, as there are millions of Americans have it.
Unfortunately, there is no cure for herpes virus, once you become infected. But, this disease could be managed and doesn’t necessarily lead to serious medical complications. But you could control it and learn how to protect yourself and others from outbreaks.

It is estimated that there are 80 million people in America infected by this virus, which means one in five adults in the United States having genital infections. There are about between 200,000 and 500,000 people infected by genital herpes each year, while the number of people getting oral infections is much higher.

What is Genital Herpes ?

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by herpes simplex viruses (HSV). The family of these viruses also could lead to chicken pox, shingles, the viruses of fever scrofula (shingles chicken pox, EB). Genital herpes is usually caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 2 (genital HSV-2). Genital herpes infection is common, one out of five adolescents and adults, have had genital HSV infection. Genital herpes also could be caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1),but HSV-1 commonly causes infections of the mouth and lips, so-called “fever blisters.”Genital herpes is recurrent painful genital sores in many adults of infections. People who diagnosed with a first episode of genital herpes could be expected to have several (typically four or five) outbreaks (symptomatic recurrences) within one year.
